What is a burpee?

When should I start the challenge?
RIGHT NOW! Seriously, step away from the computer or your phone and let’s do this! It doesn’t matter when you arrived at this page, just start.
Why should I do burpees?
We at Spartan Race believe that the burpee is the ultimate workout. Our founder Joe Desena believes it so intensely that he once did 4,000 in one day (no simple feat). Watch that experience here.
Do I have to 30 burpees all at once?
NO. The ultimate goal is to do 30 burpees in a row but break them up as much as necessary. Do two sets of 15, three sets of 10, six sets of five – whatever! Just get them done.
What is Spartan Race?
We’re an obstacle course racing series that tests you physically and mentally through mud, fire, barbed wire and fun! Follow us!
What do burpees have to do with Spartan Race?
Spartan Race is an obstacle course racing series that takes competition seriously. Our racers crawl through mud, jump over fire and sneak under barbed wire. But if they fail an obstacle, racers must complete 30 burpees before moving on. The burpee is the greatest athletic equalizer we know of!
When can I start the 30 Day Burpee Challenge?
Anytime. But the best time is RIGHT NOW! Break your 30 burpees into manageable sets at first. You’ll soon find that you’ve got so much more strength in you than you ever imagined! Stick with it!
Who is Joe De Sena and why did he make this challenge?
Joe De Sena is the founder of Spartan Race but he’s not a superhuman or ex-military trainer. He came from modest beginnings as a pool cleaner and over time transformed himself through hard work and LOTS of burpees! On Nov. 17 2013, Joe was asked to speak at Ted X Beacon St in Boston. At the conference, he challenged the audience to this 30 day challenge. He even extended the offer that anyone who genuinely wanted to accept the challenge email him at firstname.lastname@example.org. Watch the video here.
I’m out of shape, can I really do this?
YES! You make your tomorrow by defining your today – Spartan Up and believe in yourself!
I’ve completed the 30 days! What now?
Keep going! Continue to perform at least 30 burpees a day or choose to do more. You can also sign up for the Spartan Workout of the Day, which gives you daily routines to try out.
I hate burpees!
We do too, but that doesn’t mean you can’t respect them! AROO!
